How To Create A Mindful Home

Mindfulness is having a bit of a moment. Now when I hear it, I automatically think of goji berries, kale and hipster. It’s a shame. Even if you don’t practice mindfulness, it’s important to have a mindful home. Your home should be a retreat, to relax and reflect.

A Simple Start

A spectacularly simple way to begin a mindful home is to declutter. August is the perfect time of year for it. I always think of September like the start of a new year. So open all the windows and get a nice breeze flowing through the house.

An easy way to start decluttering is to ask yourself “Does this item help or hinder?”. If it’s broken, you don’t use it, never wear it or it doesn’t fit, then bin it!

We should surround ourselves with things we love but don’t fill your space with a gazillion ornaments.

Undoubtedly we’ve all been overwhelmed by guilt, at some point. It feels awful and can be difficult to shake off. Given that your home should be your sanctuary, get rid of any gifts you’ve been holding onto out of guilt. Yes, like that hideous wedding present from your Mam’s friend.

Times Are Changing

Some easy positive changes to make are having ornaments from nature such as driftwood, plants, stones or shells. They represent the essence and comfort of nature. Surround yourself with photos of family and friends, that bring about happy and secure feelings.

To help create a relaxing environment invest in some dimmer switches. Dimming lights in the evening will help you to relax and unwind. Try eating your evening meal by candlelight. It creates a beautiful atmosphere and helps you to be in the moment and savour your meal.

They say “a change is as good as a rest”. I don’t know who ‘they’ are but they’re pretty smart. A great way to clear your home and your mind is to move the furniture around. If your furniture has been sitting in the same place for years, it can make the room feel stale. Get some friends around and get moving. It’ll be a great workout if nothing else 😉

If you’re feeling especially motivated and you’d like a summer project, try painting the kitchen cabinets. Even just changing the drawer pulls can give you a fresh look and outlook. These handles from Ikea are only €7 for two. They won’t break the bank and they’ll give an instant update.


To make a mindful home consciously consider everything. Don’t feel guilty about consciously uncoupling yourself from things you no longer love or need. Take time to play your favourite song, read a book, and appreciate the moment. Stop and smell the roses.
